just like prom...

Today I went to what was the equivalent of my running prom, all dressed up fancy like. Okay so I can't say for certain that today's run was just like prom, because point of fact I have never been to a prom, or any school dance, or really any dance period (until I was in my early 20s and started going to wedding receptions that had music). I grew up in a very conservative homeschool family, dancing, music, the whole lot of it was pure evvviiieeeelllllllllll. Don't you worry, I would sneak in some of 'the rock music' every now and then and would dance quietly in my bedroom alone. Come on, what nice homeschool girl hasn't rebelled in such a horrendous way!

My point is that I broke in my running skirt today, and I wore it with my new hot pink running tops (yes plural, it's just how I roll people, I am 30 now after all). I felt so dressed up just to be running. And around mile three my run even asked me to the prom after party, I'm sure he was assuming I would put out. I quickly corrected my presumptuous run and let him know I'm a nice post-homeschool girl and it takes at least three dates and a bevy of martinis to get me to put out. Plus, doing that on prom night is so cliche... right? Because seriously it's not like I would know.

So despite the fact that the running skirt clearly hasn't caught on in Kansas yet (I gathered that from all the confused looks I got from other runners and random people at the park) I was really pleased with my attire. I wore it proudly! Seriously it was like I was some sort of odd side show in my fancy runnin' clothes. You really would have thought I was wearing a prom dress for my run. I have to admit I did feel I a tiny bit flashy and self conscious at first, but I got over it and decided I officially love that skirt, especially combined with the hot pink tops.

I would have taken a picture of me in my running prom outfit, however, Ed is out of town and Milo doesn't have opposable thumbs. So I'm giving you the next best thing and offer you a picture of the prom outfit sans me:

where is this girly girl coming from...

I'm not the girliest of girls, but I'm not totally butch either, I guess I'm kind of in-between. I'm athletic, wear jeans and sweaters or t-shirts almost every day, but love to dress up once in awhile. Heels, bags and super nice jeans are my weakness. I'm proud of the fact that I like to sweat, I love beer, I hate fruity drinks (unless you count wine, which I don't), all my running/workout clothes are black or blue, I'm not prissy or refined (I just have to play that role sometimes at my husbands work parties, but really I think they all know better), I don't wear a lot of makeup, I don't cry at movies, and please give me chicken wings and pizza any day.

However, a few weeks ago that changed. Upon Kristen the running lawyer's suggestion, I went to the skirtsport.com outlet to view their goods and instantly fell in love with the black Marathon Girl skirt. I ordered it on the spot, it didn't hurt that it was 60% off either. My new and unusual crave came in the mail a few days later. And cyperspace.... I heart it. I ripped it out of the bag and put it on, it was just incredible, so comfortable and it made me feel so pretty and feminine. The coolest part was where I thought I'd hate the way my awkward little chicken legs looked in it, but instead I loved the way my legs looked in it. On top of the whole skirt thing, another oddity I'm experiencing is currently salivating over all of Nike's new hot pink running gear. I can't help myself, literally.

So what has caused this sudden change and given me the desire to be girly? My best guess is that it's thanks to the simple fact that I am turning 30 in five days. This is currently my excuse for every bizarre thought or action, and any discrepancy in my norm for the past few weeks. It's all being blamed on the fact I'm turning 30. Like the fact that I was standing in the middle of my kitchen squirting E-Z-Cheese into my mouth and chasing it with orange juice and Sprees while Milo was sitting there telling the entire household that "yep, fluffy has lost it,' I looked at him and blamed it on turning 30. Or when I started spontaneously crying at some baby commercial, also blamed on turning 30. Or the reasoning behind turning my blog pink...seriously, it's just so not like me, but it came over me like a wave, a little voice saying, change your blog... make it pink, so I did. And of course it's also my best guess on the whole girly running gear thing as well, I'm turning 30, I do what I want. Be forewarned that I'm going to use this excuse for everything and anything over the next year.

Now I must eat my sloppy joe and drink my beer because some things will never change once I turn 30...
